PrIMARY School

The Primary Division program is guided by Charleston Day School's mission of providing an educational atmosphere that fosters scholarship, integrity, self-esteem, respect for others, and responsibility. CharlestonDay School takes pride in its commitment to helping students reach their academic potential in a setting that emphasizes the development of personal values.

The small school setting enables faculty to provide care that nurtures each child's uniqueness, strives to find a child's strengths and special talents, and utilizes these strengths to build on weaker skills. The goal of the Primary Department is to create a program that will develop confidence and competence in its students through a strong partnership between school and home.   Students are at the heart of the educational process in this student-centered school, as we continually revise our programs, always asking what is best for our children.

The core curriculum emphasizes a strong foundation in the basic skills of language arts, math, social studies, and science. Emphasis is placed on developing a love of reading and teaching a high level of skills in writing, grammar, traditional math, public speaking, and technology. Classes in French, computer, art, music, drama, physical education, and library are offered weekly in grades one through three. The development of responsible citizens and effective future leaders is promoted through the ethics course, community service projects, and the focus on personal responsibility.

Fostering a love for learning, the desire to excel, and the value in goal setting and responsibility are paramount to the primary program and foremost in our plan to celebrate each child's individuality.
