SPRING CONCERT AND ART SHOW
The Spring Concert and Art Show will be held on Thursday, April 19 at 5:30 p.m. in Memminger Auditorium. The students are to arrive at the auditorium at 5:00 p.m. The girls are asked to wear spring dresses or skirts/blouses, and the boys are to wear long khaki pants, button down collared shirts, and dress shoes. After the concert, families are invited to tour the art displays also set up at Memminger. Everyone is invited - including gradparents. Come celebrate 75 years of music.

CELEBRATION OF SPORTS NIGHT - APRIL 12
Our Annual Celebration of Sports is just around the corner. This event, for fourth through eight grades, reminds us each year of the valuable lessons we can learn through athletics. This year's featured guest speaker is NFL Hall of Fame inductee Joe DeLamielleure, who spent most of his NFL career with the Buffalo Bills.

Dinner will be "tailgate style" to reflect the theme of the night. Barbeque dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m. in the front parking lot of Charleston Day. At 6:30 p.m., we'll file into the Commons Room for the presentation by Joe DeLamielleure. The event should be over by 7:30 p.m.

Attire: Boys should wear sports shirts and nice shorts/slacks. Girls should wear skirts/tops or dresses. No flip flops please!

Notice: Due to the "Tailgate Party Dinner" in the parking lot, the parking lot will be closed at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday in order to prepare for the event.

LOST AND FOUND
The lost and found in the main hallway is overflowing! All unclaimed items will be taken to Goodwill on Friday, April 13.

 

1st and 2nd GRADE TRI-MATH-ALONS
The second annual Tri-Math-alon will be held for our first and second graders again this year! The Tri-Math-alon takes place at a smaller field beside Hampton Park. After a morning of competitions, we will all gather in Hampton Park for lunch followed by an awards program. We need your help and want your participation in this fun celebration of math and physical activities! We need drivers to get us there. We then need parents to head up teams and work at stations. We are hoping each school can provide 10 parent volunteers in addition to us as teachers, to help best ensure a safe, fun, orderly, and educational opportunity for our children. As a parent volunteer, you would either be in charge of taking a group of students (several students from each participating school) around to the various challenges, remaining at an event guiding the children through the event, or assisting with scorekeeping. Please let Katie Richardson know if you are available to join us on the day of your child's Tri-math-alon.

First grade - Thursday, April 12 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Second grade - Friday, April 13 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

FIELD DAY - APRIL 20
We still need about 10 parent volunteers! Please email Marnie Kerrison for more information.

- Field Day T shirts are not required, but make it easier for parents and fun for the students.
If you would like to order a field day shirt please Contact Kelly Carr at 202.338.0300. When ordering specify if your child is on the Red or Blue Team and what size (Youth S (6/8), Youth M(10/12), Youth L(14/16), Youth XL(18/20), Adult S(35/37)). Shirts are $12.00, please send payment into school with checks made out to Charleston Day Parents' Council. Orders MUST be placed no later than Thursday the 12th of April. We will not be ordering any extras. Shirts will be sent home on April 19th.

- On the day of field day, April 20, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., children will need to bring a reusable water bottle filled with water labeled with their name and a dollar for the gate entrance to James Island County Park. Drivers dropping off and picking up do not have to pay.

- The children should dress in their respective team color red or blue even if they don't buy a Field Day tshirt.

- Snack and lunch will be provided.

EARTH DAY - APRIL 19 and 22
All students and parents are invited to Hazel Parker at 4-6 PM on Thursday, April 19 to celebrate Earth Day. Several events are planned for fun and education. We particularly want to get input from kids and parents on what Wellness activities are available at your school and what the community can do to make it safer for kids to walk and bike to school. Experts from Safe Rides to School, Charleston Moves and Safe Kids will bring activities, answer questions and even check out your bike and helmet if you chose to bring them. City Planning is providing us with a giant map of Charleston streets and what so far has proven safe for biking and walking. But these maps need help from kids and parents to show their preferred connections to schools, Parks and Playgrounds. This then will remain at Hazel Parker for further input, ultimately leading to something we all can use to enjoy all that is around our schools.

Crystal Reed, the Hazel Parker Director, will help all kids decorate and pot a plant of their own which is a preview of a project that will soon come from the Parks Conservancy. Other fun projects with the Parks will be previewed Working from a master board of the CDC criteria for Healthy Schools, parents and children will be able to spot what they already have at their schools and with what they might want help. Pictures will be taken for a Hazel Parker “Facebook” with quotes from students. Members of the Lean Team at MUSC will be able to answer any questions parents or students have about staying healthy. Expect some surprise goodies.

We also will lead a Bike Train on April 22, which is Earth Day, from Hazel Parker to Hampton Park at 1 PM. This is the site of a host of activities sponsored by Charleston Parks Conservancy for the last 3 years called Teddy Bear Picnic. Carrying a picnic on a bike might be too much, so eat ahead or put your name on a list 4/19 for a picnic lunch to be delivered. Riding bikes from Hazel Parker to Hampton Park will let families see how much fun it is being protected by more experienced bike riders and being able to enjoy the other parks we pass on our way. We will return by bike train at 3:30PM with an option for earlier departure. Once you have been part of a Bike Train, you will never want to carpool again. Join your friends, neighbors and families from other schools on both dates. You want to be the first year participants of this annual event to celebrate this great planet and the best City on the Planet.

FROM THE LIBRARIAN
This morning, Cynthia Grosso of The Charleston School of Protocol and Etiquette and author of B Polite, The Proper Penguin visited with the the Primary students in the Library. B Polite is the most well-mannered penguin of all, and he will help the students remember how to "be polite". We will have copies of his book for sale, so please look for the order form in Tuesday's folder. This was a great lead-in to the Easter Egg Hunt later in the morning.
