Welcome New and Returning Students!

August 22

oldest and youngest raise flagCharleston Day began the first full day of school Aug. 21 by gathering the whole school in the parking lot to raise the American flag and sing the National Anthem.

In keeping with CDS tradition, the oldest student (this year two share a birthday) and the youngest student work together to raise the flag.

Earlier that morning, Head of School Judith Foley Arnstein greeted students who then passed through an arch the eighth grade formed with their arms. This year’s student body of 257 includes 47 new students.

opening day 2018Our students represent more than a dozen zip codes locally, as well as new families who have recently moved here from Tennessee, Connecticut, Ohio and California.

During the first few days, students participated in activities to get to know each other better and set classroom expectations.

For example, third graders drew self-portraits and filled out an “All About Me” booklet. Fourth graders formed teams to play a memory name game involving famous figures, and fifth graders worked in pairs to create a suggested list of incentives for good behavior. Homework pass, anyone? Kindergarteners and first graders took a tour of the campus, making stops along the way to meet teachers and visit classrooms.

These relationships provide a foundation for all the new skills and knowledge we’ll learn this year!
