Named after Charleston Day’s first Board Chair, Benjamin Allston Moore, Jr. ’44, the Moore House is a unique learning environment. As a downtown school, it is essential to maintain the integrity of the home’s original architecture and historic character and meet modern learning needs. Renovations include improved lighting, new floors, and storage, while preserving original woodwork and architectural details. As one student noted about the first floor art space, “It feels special to make art in an old house. It’s like a real artist’s studio.”
During the summer of 2026, CDS moved the Learning Services Department to the house at 7 Magazine. The classic Charleston single house provides space for small group learning and one-on-one support.
The Learning Services Department works directly with students to help them access the curriculum and collaborates with teachers, tutors, and parents to ensure a coordinated, team-based approach to each student’s success. Although the Learning Services Department works primarily with students who have or may need accommodations, it works with administration to ensure the overall Charleston Day teaching and learning program appropriately challenges and supports all students.
The third-floor terrace at Charleston Day School is a unique learning space because it takes learning beyond the traditional classroom. Students use the outdoor setting to observe nature, explore math concepts, read, write, collaborate, and participate in hands-on activities. Its elevated location provides views of downtown Charleston and its famous church steeples, helping students connect what they learn in school to our historic city.
Our school library serves several important purposes. The library fosters a love of reading by offering a diverse selection of books, including fiction and non-fiction, catering to various interests and reading levels. In fact, students and faculty check out more than 9,000 books in a school year! That’s a lot of reading.
When students are not browsing books or enjoying a read aloud or mystery book activity during library time, they might be participating in a technology class. Technology class activities vary depending on the age of the students. Students receive instruction on a range of skills from the basics of a slide show presentation to effective research methods, including how to find, evaluate, and use information from various digital and print sources.
The library provides a filming location for The Clarion news program elective for 7th and 8th graders, and we offer an innovation area too. With robotics, circuits, building, and coding activities available, our media specialist and technology teacher work in tandem with our school’s science teachers to support classroom learning.
