Our shared activities and traditions tie our community together and make the CDS Experience truly special!
Charleston Day School coaches teach sportsmanship, perseverance, team work, and self-discipline as part of our athletic program.
In the arts program, teachers encourage students to build strong character traits such as persistence, patience, collaboration, courage, creativity, respect, and edification of others through drawing, painting, musical theater and other forms of artistic expression.
Students in all grades engage in service projects to instill a sense of initiative and community responsibility. Fundraising for local charities, partnering with neighboring schools, running food and clothes drives throughout the year, and creating independent projects make up the robust community services program at CDS.
A vast body of research shows that improved nutrition in schools leads to increased focus and attention, improved academics, and better classroom behavior. Our head chef and his team provide healthy lunch choices each day. Students eat at tables with a mix of classmates and teachers. Eating “family style” helps children make healthy food choices by seeing positive attitudes from teachers and peers and encourages conversation and community.
Because of its unique location in one of the most visited historic cities in the nation, our small campus expands to all of Charleston as CDS students regularly leave campus by foot for experiential learning opportunities.
The after-school program can be a great chance to complete homework, read a book, or build friendships with students in other grade levels. In addition, students may wish to register for enrichment classes. The offerings change throughout the year, and new offerings are shared weekly in our school newsletter.
