At Charleston Day School, sportsmanship, respect for others, teamwork, good attitudes, skill development and a passion for sports measure the success of our athletic program.
In addition to physical education classes multiple times a week, Charleston Day offers basketball, golf, futsal, sailing, volleyball, tennis, and running club.
The school maintains a no-cut policy; therefore, all interested children are encouraged to join a team. Typically, we have at least one team per grade for basketball and volleyball.
For basketball, Lil’ Scorps play on Saturday mornings in our gym. They develop an enthusiasm for the game and the spirit of competition while playing against each other.
Students focus on learning the rules of the game, building a team, developing skills and participating in organized games.
Students play the game at a higher level. While winning is not the focus of the overall program, preparing and competing to win is. That preparation helps students develop character traits aligned with the Mission of the school, such as perseverance, discipline and tenacity.
The CDS Sailing Club is open to experienced sailors in grades 5-8. Sailing takes place at the Charleston City Marina.
More than 75% of CDS students in grades 1-8 play basketball, and we often field more than one team per grade. First and second graders play in our intramural Lil’ Scorps program, with games/clinics held on Saturday mornings beginning in November and ending in mid-February at CDS. Third and fourth graders play in the Athletic Association of St. Joseph (AASTJ). Fifth-eighth grade teams play in the Trident League and travel to many different schools for their games.
Tennis is offered to 4th-8th grade boys and girls. We play through the City of Charleston and practice at the Charleston Tennis Center in West Ashley. The staff will evaluate the players, who then will be placed on the appropriate team according to skill level. Matches are played at area tennis centers in Mt. Pleasant, downtown and West Ashley.
Golf is a spring sport for 6th-8th grade boys and girls. Students practice at Charleston Municipal Golf Course (2110 Maybank Highway). The matches are at local golf courses.
CDS partners with area leagues including Trident, Athletic Association of St. Joseph (AASTJ), and the City of Charleston.
