We’ve removed many desks and chairs from our classrooms in grades 1-3 and replaced them with stools, carpet squares and yoga balls. Teachers who have tried such flexible seating options in other schools say it creates learners who are more motivated and engaged. Students rely on core strength to sit, and the physical alertness translates to mental alertness. We’re testing our own flexibility by trying it out to see how our students respond.
