2020 Holiday Message from the Head of School

December 18

Dear Charleston Day School Families,

I loved the school’s holiday card this year. To be honest, I love it every year, because we celebrate and showcase student art in the card. This year’s card features three student artists’ works, and what I love about it is that it represents their view of CDS and 2020. The cover of the card has a rendering of the front gate of the school, with peace doves and votive lights decorating the walkway. The back cover of the card spells out the four pillars of the school – integrity, scholarship, respect and responsibility – using wrapped presents to illustrate the letters of each word. Inside the card, an adorable Rudolph wears a mask that reads, “Happy Holidays.” Even in the midst of a pandemic, these students had a vision of the school that reflected comfort, tradition and a bit of humor. And that is what I hope our community has provided and continues to provide your family during these uncertain times.

Last spring, we could not have predicted what the coming months would bring. What we could predict was that our school community would come together to allow Charleston Day School to rise to the challenges that lie ahead. Faculty, staff and families have worked together to allow us to have our students on campus each and every day. At a time when large parts of the country, and many students in Charleston, remain in remote learning, our community has been able to sustain in-person learning. I do not take the sacrifices that everyone has made lightly. Both students and faculty have had to adjust to a new landscape. There have been changes and silver linings, but the one constant that has endured is the strength of community and spirit that defines Charleston Day School.

As the year 2020 comes to a close, we can’t help but look to the future. Our children show us each day that there is promise and success ahead. I’ll close with one of my favorite quotes from Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed individuals can change the world. In fact, it is the only thing that ever has.” I am grateful that you are part of Charleston Day School’s small committed group. Wishing you and your family a healthy and peaceful holiday, with hopes for great successes and a return to the familiar in 2021.

With Gratitude,

P.S. Each December, I write a special holiday poem for the faculty and students. The 2020 poem is recorded here. Enjoy!
