Charleston Day is proud to share that Keller Smith is the 2024 recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award. Mrs. Smith’s contagious smile and laugh has brightened the halls of Charleston Day School for over a decade. Her peers describe Mrs. Smith as an eternal optimist and a compassionate colleague who is always willing to listen, be a thought partner, give a hug, or whatever is needed in the moment.
Keller incorporates music in everything she teaches, from reading to math to teaching children to be kind to their friends. She knows just what to say and do to gently help students regulate their big and ever changing emotions. Her creativity abounds in her classroom. Mrs. Smith hand-selects and masterfully organizes a colorful collage of bright images and items to make learning fun for her students.
One young CDS alum had this to say. “She was one of the most memorable teachers I have ever had. She always opened class with a smile and welcoming atmosphere. I am so grateful for her positivity, kindness, and hard work.” Another former Scorpion remarked, “I remember she greeted me with a hug every morning and taught me to tie my shoes.”
It is clear that Keller Smith has positively impacted the lives of all members of the CDS community, from current and former students to faculty and staff to our parents. Congratulations again, Mrs. Smith!
Excellence in Teaching Award Background
The Kronsberg family established the Excellence in Teaching Fund in September, 2016. Edward (‘81) and Amy Kronsberg wanted to establish an avenue to recognize and show appreciation for faculty members. They were grateful for all of the teachers in the Charleston Day School community who taught their three boys. CDS is filled with exemplary educators. Each year the School seeks nominations from parents, current and former faculty members, and alumni to recognize the dedication and commitment of its teachers.
Last year’s recipient was Director of Athletics, Travis Whetzel. To read more about our amazing faculty and staff, CLICK HERE.
