A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park
One benefit of remote learning was developing an email relationship with students. They would send casual notes about things that happened to them during the day or to share connections to class topics since they could not tell me in person. Conversations I might have had with students at lunch or by the lockers started happening over email. I enjoyed having an alternative connection with 4th graders since we could not be together in person.
Sending and receiving paper letters in the mail. Students received a letter from the point of view of a key book character, and they responded in the voice of the main character from the story. The letter needed to include enough details that students showed an understanding of the plot and character. Creativity was encouraged too! Students added pictures to the letters or inserted items in the envelopes that represented the book characters.
