To celebrate the amazing artwork created by Charleston Day School students in the 2019-2020 year, art teachers Ms. Hopkins and Mrs. Seitz created a website with galleries for each grade, K-8. Every CDS student is represented! Enjoy a video compilation of the middle school famous art recreations. There is even a Remote Learning Gallery in which a sampling of the student artwork created remotely in the fourth quarter is on display.
An exciting aspect of remote learning for the visual arts was the challenge of creating assignments that could only be done at home. Artworks included photography, family members, homes and pets…even things found in the kitchen. Famous artists were also studied closely. Some impressive artworks were done remotely! Well done, Scorpions!

About CDS Visual Art
Beginning in Kindergarten, every Charleston Day student receives art instruction weekly. The lower school grades focus on learning and exploring art with art history. Students express themselves through painting, drawing, sculpting, collage and printmaking inspired by such artists as Monet, Cezanne, Hiroshige, Picasso, Van Gogh and more.
Middle school art classes advance students’ understanding of the elements of art and principles of design through the study of famous artists and art history, personal expression, exposure to a variety of techniques and materials, and modern design. Students gain confidence and mastery in drawing from observation with still life assignments, renderings from photos, and occasional outdoor excursions. Creative risk-taking and time management skills are supported and developed in the middle school years.
