Charleston Day School

Athletic Philosophy

Participation Encouraged

At Charleston Day School, sportsmanship, respect for others, teamwork, good attitudes, skill development and a passion for sports measure the success of our athletic program.

In addition to physical education classes three times a week, Charleston Day offers basketball, golf, lacrosse, sailing, volleyball and tennis.

No Cut Policy

The school maintains a no-cut policy; therefore, all interested children are encouraged to join a team. Typically, we have at least one team per grade for basketball and volleyball.

Philosophy Prioritizes Mission

Developmental Skills, grades 1-2

For basketball, Lil’ Scorps play on Saturday mornings in our gym. They develop an enthusiasm for the game and the spirit of competition while playing against each other.

The Rules of the Game, Grades 3-6

Students focus on learning the rules of the game, building a team, developing skills and participating in organized games.

Preparing to Compete, grades 7-8

Students play the game at a higher level. While winning is not the focus of the overall program, preparing and competing to win is. That preparation helps students develop character traits aligned with the Mission of the school, such as perseverance, discipline and tenacity.

Spirt of the Scorpion

Each year we recognize two athletes who have consistently demonstrated the tenets of our Mission: Scholarship, Integrity, Respect and Responsibility.
